Our part of the Skallerud family tree

Inspired by the work my brother, Richard Skallerud, as done so far (see http://www.rdsdesigns.com/2004/), I decided to dig into understanding exactly where we've come from in Norway.  This is what I've found so far:

1801 Norwegian Census
My great, great, great, great grandfather Hans Halvorsen, born 1783 in Eidsberg, Norway, found in the census here:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f10125.wc2&gardpostnr=34&personpostnr=570&merk=570#ovre

1865 Norwegian Census
There were 2 Skallerud farms in Thrygstad
My great, great great grandfather (Andreas Hansen, b. July 1810 in Eidsberg, Østfold, Norway) is listed as the owner of this farm, listed in 0122 Thrygstad
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60122.wc2&gardpostnr=214&merk=214#ovre

The 2nd Skallerud farm is in Skiptvet.

He had several children, my great, great grandfather Anton Skallerud (b. January 1848 in Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway) being one of them.

Anton had a son, Henry A. Skallerud born in 1882 in Minnesota.

One interesting mystery is from the 1865 Skallerud Farm census link above. This shows where Anton's father and 3 youngest kids were.  Where was Birthe, Hans and Anton, his oldest 3 children? I searched for those born in 1848 (Anton) and found Johan Anton Andreason living in Eidsberg (kind of coincidental?)
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=hentglobal&register=fodeaar&pgj=16&teljing=ft1865&filnamn=f60125.wc2&amt=1&funnenr=451

So I'm guessing that Johan Anton Andreason is Anton Andreason, my great, great grandfather.  Perhaps he was going to school there off the farm and then emigrated to the US instead of returning to the farm?  If he emigrated in 1870, he would be 22, a perfect age to start a new life!  His older brother, Hans, was 23 when he emigrated in 1868.

Their sister Birthe, immigrated through New York on July 29, 1870 out of Oslo:

Regarding the 2nd farm in Thrygstad, more information is found here:

I wonder if we were related, or if perhaps they were simply renters or family friends?

In 1875 census, there is no longer any record of a Skallerud farm, which, from what I understand, is because this census was only performed in the towns, not on the farms.

In 1900 census, the Skallerud farm in 0122 Trøgstad is recorded again (note city name change from Thrygstad)

Totally different names.  Until I learn more, I'm guessing the farm was sold to new owners who would not be related to me.

I was helping someone recently who had ancestors that lived briefly at Skallerud, but it was a different family. Most of your data on Anton is correct, with the exception of his place of birth. He was not born in Trogstad parish:

Confirmed at Trøgstad church, Østfold, 12 Oct 1862
#31, Anton Andreasen Skallerud
Born 7 Jan 1848 at Brattefos farm in Trømberg
Father: Andreas Hansen
Mother: Elen Axelsdatter

Kildeinformasjon: Østfold fylke, Trøgstad, Ministerialbok nr. I 8A (1855-1864), Konfirmerte 1862, side 200.

Trømberg parish is not too far from Trøgstad. For periods of time, Trømberg was a sub-parish of Eidsberg.

Here is Anton's birth record:
#6
Born 7 Jan 1848
Place of birth: Søndre Berg farm in Trømberg sub-parish
Father: Andreas Hansen
Mother: Elen Axelsdatter

Kildeinformasjon: Østfold fylke, Eidsberg, Ministerialbok nr. I 8 (1832-1848), Fødte og døpte 1848, side 142.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2&idx_...

As you can see, his birth record says he was born at Søndre Berg, and his confirmation says he was born at Brattefos. I would go with Søndre Berg as this was recorded at his birth. Brattefos was recorded 15 years later when he was confirmed. At any rate, he was born in "Trømberg i Eidsberg" - not "Trøgstad". He moved to Trøgstad at a later date, but before he was 15.

I don't know if you realize this - but when Anton and Berthe arrived in New York in 1870, they were probably the LAST members of the family to arrive in America.

Anton's mother (Elen Axelsdatter) and siblings Johan, Anne and Julia left Oslo on 15 May 1869 with the destination of Chicago. Apparently, Anton's father (Andreas Hansen) left earlier. In the 1880 census, Andreas is livng with his wife and daughters Anne and Julia at 507 17th Avenue South in Minneapolis, using the name "Antony Skallerud".

Here they are, #4012 - #4015

The records of people leaving the parish of Trøgstad are not very complete, but I did find Hans Andreasen Skallerud (born ca. Dec. 1845, bother of Anton), leaving the parish to emigrate to America on 14 Sep 1868.
